With over 10 years of expertise in microbiology at BioLabTests, we have extensive experience in environmental testing services to provide insights into the microbial activity of various environments. We recently conducted a comprehensive environmental testing study for Factory Direct Flooring, shedding light on microbial contamination in residential carpets and its broader implications for hygiene
Environmental Testing Study
Environmental testing involves collecting data relating to microbial counts recovered from air and surface samples, primarily through settle plates and swabs. Our team of experienced microbiologists offer comprehensive environmental testing services, providing testing kits for remote sample collection. In this study, our team analysed nearly 100 swabs taken from various rooms in UK homes, including bedrooms, hallways, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Each room’s carpet was swabbed before and after cleaning to evaluate the effectiveness of different cleaning methods.
Key Findings from Environmental Testing for Factory Direct Flooring
The environmental testing revealed that bedroom carpets were the most unclean, with high levels of Staphylococcus bacteria, which can cause infections in humans. Hallways and stairs followed, with mould and bacteria being more prevalent due to high foot traffic. The most common microorganisms found in carpets were yeast and mould, followed by Staphylococcus and Bacillus, which can pose various health risks. Cleaning effectiveness was also assessed, showing that vacuuming significantly reduced bacteria on carpets by an average of 67%. However, bedroom carpets were more challenging to clean, with vacuuming only reducing bacteria by 53%, compared to an 88% reduction in living room carpets.
How We Conduct Environmental Testing
- Swab collection
For surface sampling, we issue sterile, individually wrapped swabs containing transport medium. These swabs are used to collect bacteria from solid surfaces by gently and firmly rubbed against a specific area of 5x5cm. After collection, the swab is placed back into the transport medium, labelled for identification, and immediately stored in a temperature-controlled fridge to preserve the samples viability.
At our laboratory, the swabs are vortexed to disperse any microorganisms, which are then pipetted and spread onto growth media: ordinarily plate count agar (PCA) for bacterial species and Sabouraud dextrose agar (SAB) for fungi.
- Settle plates
To sample airborne microorganisms, settle plates are exposed to the air in occupied rooms. Microbe-bearing particles settle onto plates with Sabouraud dextrose agar (for fungi) and nutrient agar (for bacteria). SAB plates incubate at 30°C for 21 days, with readings on days 14 and 21. Nutrient agar plates incubate at 35°C for 48 hours, with readings at 24 and 48 hours.
Implications of Environmental Testing
Understanding the microbial landscape of different spaces through environmental testing is essential for a few reasons:
Health Impact
Surfaces can harbour a range of pollutants and allergens, including food debris, skin cells, dust mites, and bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. These pollutants can become airborne during activities like vacuuming or walking on the carpet, which can exacerbate lung conditions.
Effective Cleaning
The study with Factory Direct Flooring demonstrates that visual cleanliness does not always equate to microbial cleanliness. Environmental testing can reveal hidden issues that typical cleaning methods might not address.
Preventative Measures
Environmental testing enables the ability to identify and understand potential microbial risks within an environment before they become significant issues. This proactive approach is particularly valuable in settings such as workplaces, schools, and public facilities, where maintaining a hygienic environment is a priority for the well-being of all individuals.
How Environmental Testing Benefits Various Settings
BioLabTests’ comprehensive environmental testing services equip organisations with the data needed to make informed decisions about cleanliness and safety. By leveraging our expertise, you can enhance the effectiveness of your cleaning practices and prioritise the well-being of your environment.
Residential Spaces: In homes, including those where multiple people reside such as elderly homes, assisted living facilities, and disabled homes, environmental testing can reveal hidden contaminants on multiple surfaces. Identifying the levels of bacteria and allergens helps residents take actions to improve the cleanliness of the environments.
Commercial and Industrial Settings: For businesses, particularly in the hospitality, healthcare, and food industries, environmental testing is essential. It helps ensure that facilities are not only compliant with health regulations but also free from harmful microorganisms that could affect employees and customers.
Educational and Office Environments: Schools, universities, and office spaces can benefit from environmental testing by monitoring microbial levels in classrooms, common areas, and workspaces. This proactive approach supports a healthier learning and working environment by identifying ways to minimise the spread of microorganisms that can cause illnesses, enhancing overall productivity.
